Get field value from Details View

Firstly i apologise if this is a really easy question to answer or if i am going about this in completely the wrong way as I have only just started using ASP.net and SQL server and have been thrown right in the deep end.

I am trying to get the value from a field within the details view which holds the id which is needed to perform a query, whose results then disable/enable a button, but i just can't seem to get it to pick up a value.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How do you mean the details view?

Is the field you are trying to get to on a page (If so, what type of control), or in an SQL view. (Im assuming that its a control on a page, but better to make sure!)

What language are you working in?

there are a few ways to do this..but a little more info should be added by you so you get the correct answer.

are you using a SQL SP? if so make sure you have @@SELECT IDENTITY at the end of your SP.

then you can get that value either by a reader or look into the ExecuteScalar command.

but again, more info by you is needed.
