Some of the advice in thread48-768609 I've used successfully to cure my own print aggrevations. I don't have a specific problem right now, but a general question along these lines. BTW, I'm running Metaframe XPs FR3 on a Win2k box with all it's updates.
The most important tip was the "well known" hotfix that addresses a complete print systems failure that will probably happen if you don't use it. Reference Hotfix XE103W2K082.
I spent the time to visit all my clients and double check their print drivers. I also gave everyone a logical computer name so I can track the printers on the server. We're only allowing the default printer to be created.
Be wary of those client installed print drivers. I looked once at an HP 1200 that was supposed to be using a PCL 5e driver. After more problems, it turned out the client really had a PCL 6 driver loading. The proper incantations uttered in an extinct language known only to a few sailors remedied that problem. Of course now the ladies think I'm possessed and won't let me back in their office until I've been exorcised.
I mapped a printer for each client based on their ICA Client Name. I did that in the Management Console under the Printer Management section by right clicking on Printers / Client Printers.
This way I figure no matter what printer they have I can force a driver. All but one or two are perfect matches. The couple don't seem to be a problem right now. (Key on "right now" - see future post in unknown language.)
This morning I was cruising through the Application Event Log and saw: [red]"The configured client printer(s) cannot be auto-created for the client (26-CLIENT). You can only configure client-printers to be auto-created for DOS and Windows-CE ICA clients."[/red]
It appears that the message is occurring each time a client logs on. Now I'm guessing that I'm not force feeding the drivers like I wanted to. Things seem to be working well enough. Ultimately my question is where should I be mapping my non-DOS client printers? I see in Management Console/Printer Management/Drivers that I can right click on any driver and go to a mapping table. Is this where I should match driver to driver? If so, how do I add other platforms? Windows 2000 is the only one listed. I might need Windows 98 or Windows XP.
Thanks,
CR
