For about 2 weeks when I try to shut my laptop down I get a message that it cannot shutdown gelngmep.exe. This file is in my System 32 folder and shows it was created about the time I started having problems... what is this file. I cannot find a reference anywhere on the net or elsewhere. no one seems to know what this file is. Anyone have any ideas?

I am running AVG 7 which updates and scans daily. I have run Adaware, Stinger, housecall online scan, cwshredder, and hijackthis. Did not find a thing.

Did the file appear in the Hijack This log? If so remove it, make sure you enable the backup facility in Hijack This first. That way if you actually need the file you will be able to restore it.

If not post your log here or in the spyware forum.

Re-ran Hijackthis ... found a web event tracker this time.. removed it. Seemed to have fixed the problem.

ok Guys... found the scoop on Gelngmep.exe. It is the BKDR_BERBEW.F virus backdoor job. TrendMicro has the details to remove this crab....
