I have a gateway system loaded with XP. The Gateway splash screen shows up on booting for about 30 seconds. Then the screen goes black for another 20-30 seconds before the log in screen comes up, sometimes longer. It takes far too long to boot up. Does anyone know how to get rid of the splash screen or know what may be causing the slow boot up? I thought the bios, but can't seem to find it in there. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

The normal XP splash screen is at C:\windows\winnt.bmp, don't know about Gateway. Check and you should see HD activity while the Gateway splash screen is showing, If you boot up in save mode you will see the drivers loading the splash screen is being displayed while those drivers are being loaded. If you computer is slow booting up it probably because of spyware or 2 much stuff loading on start up if you don't have Adaware SE and Spybot S&D down load them and update and run. Also go Start and Run and type msconfig and check the startup tab and try un checking programs that don't have to startup on boot. AIM RealPlayer and the like will slow down boot up !!

Replace c:\windows\winnt.bmp with whatever image you want to be your splash screen.

As far as long boot times, you may have too much overhead loading during system boot. Run MSCONFIG and take a look at the services and startup tab. Remove any apps or progs that are suspect of taking up too much overhead. However, be careful not to remove anything you don't know about.

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!

Here are a few suggestions to try.

My guess is that that gateway splash screen is in the BIOS. If that's where it is, even if there is an option to turn it off, it won't change the time it takes XP to load. The links that linney provided should help with that.

I know about a system (not a Gateway) where one can choose in the BIOS for a startup screen showing for 4, 10, 20 or 30 seconds. There is no option to switch off this BIOS boot screen, or set the time to zero seconds.
This is done to let peripherals spin up (initialize) decently (e.g. SCSI or USB hardisk drives) before any OS is loaded.

HTH.

I was able to get rid of the flash screen by changing the jumper on the hard drive. However, I still have the 30 second delay before the log in screen. Any other ideas? I've updated the bios, updated all the drivers.

Try skipping the memory test during post. By any chance do you have PXE boot turned on? If so, turn it off. Make sure your boot order is correct (not that it should make much difference, but).

Also, what kind of power does your PC have??? (cpu, memory, etc.)

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!
