Hello:

After the game "Beachhead 2000 Demo" starts up, I hear music, see Main screen, can access OPTIONS, can access HELP . . . but, when I click "PLAY" - it seems like the game is supposed to change my screen from 800x600x16-bits to 640x480x16 . . . then, I get a small message box saying that

"BH (Beachhead) cannot change to 640x480x16 screen."

I then have to restart the computer.

QUESTION:
What makes this screen change in my computer, is it the PROGRAM I am running?
Where should I check to see why this screen change is not working correctly?

FACTS:

In SYSTEM.INI . . .

[boot]
display.drv=pnpdrvr.drv

[boot.description]
display.drv=RAGE PRO TURBO AGP 2x (English)

In WIN.INI . . .

[DrawDib]
pnpdrvr.drv 640x480x16(0)=37,5,5,5
pnpdrvr.drv 800x600x16(0)=37,5,5,5
pnpdrvr.drv 800x600x8(0)=55,0,0,0

When I first bought my computer, my MONITOR was setup in Device Manager as a "Plug n Play Monitor." I researched this monitor and found out it was a "Smile CB6738SL" and installed the file "SMILE1.INF" from the monitor's manufacturer . . . removing "Plug n Play Monitor" from Device Manager.

I notice (in the beginning of this post) the "PNPDRVR.DRV" and wondered if my machine is still looking for a "Plug n Play Monitor" instead my new SMILE DRIVER. ( ???? )

MY MACHINE:

Nimble (1998 custom-built) Computer.
Intel Pentium II, MMX, 300MHz.
Windows 95-b OEM OSR2.5 4.03.1212
ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP 2X 4MB (28MB AGP) Video Card using the Rage Pro TURBO driver 4.11.2560 (using AGP SLOT in Motherboard).
Smile 17" 0.26dp Digital Color Monitor.
192MB SDRAM DIMM Memory Modules.

BEACHHEAD 2000 DEMO - GAME INFO:

The actual Retail version needs 350MHz Processor.
This DEMO version says it needs only 233MHz.
I have all the Minimum Requirements for this DEMO.
There is no mention of how much Video Memory is required for this game . . . I only have 4MB (28MB AGP).

WHY won't it change over to 640x480x16 resolution ???????

THANK YOU.

Right click on an open area of the desktop and choose Properties/Settings and change to the right res before you run it...then change it back when you're thru.

Dramo:

Picked this up on the DEMO download site..

Minimum System Requirements

Pentium 350MHz or higher
Windows(r) 95/98/Me
64MB RAM
90MB hard disk space
DirectX compatible sound card
16MB DirectX(r) compatible video cards

You are seriously under powered as far as the processor and video card is concerned.

Evening all,
I was going to post a long answer to this - I missed the obvious solution gargouille, live and learn ;-) .

SESaskDFC, could you post the link to the page you were looking at about the spec - This is the only one I could find (though I didn't look too hard);

Which basically says that DRAMO4298's system is fine.

Regards. It not what you say but how you say it that counts...apparently.

Thanks Murray,
That clears up the confusion; your link is for Beachhead 2002 and DRAMO4298 is playing the demo for the 2000 version.

Regards. It not what you say but how you say it that counts...apparently.

Ouch.. not seeing what I was reading..

Point taken and I stand corrected.

Hello again and thanks for the replies:

Gargouille, I changed the settings in Display Properties - Display Area and tried these . . .

Screen: 640x480
Desktop: 800x600
Color Palette: High Color (16 bit)

Screen: 640x480
Desktop: 640x480
Color Palette: High Color (16 bit)

When I hit the "PLAY" button, I ended up at the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH with the message . . .

"A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0157:BFF85D82. The current application will be terminated."

Had to restart the computer.

NEW FACTS:

Today, I tried this DEMO on a "eMachines eTower 667ir" computer running WINDOWS ME. This machine has an AC'97 Onboard Sound (chip?) and Integrated Onboard Video (chip?).

It worked here and I was able to play all 3-DEMO levels of the game.

What I noticed here was, after I hit the "PLAY" button, the resolution changes to (I guess) 640x480x16 and I made sure I chose (in OPTIONS) "Low Resolution," rather than Medium or High.

What happens after hitting "PLAY" is that "Microsoft Internet Explorer" opens up and after a few seconds I get a page that says to either BUY NOW or PLAY NOW.

When I hit the PLAY NOW button, the screen goes blank for a couple of seconds and then the game screen appears and I can begin playing.

On my present computer, I don't see the "Internet Explorer" open and I just get the "Blue Screen of Death" and that previous message.

So for some reason, "Microsoft Internet Explorer" is NOT opening to allow me to get to the PLAY NOW button.

TO OTHERS:
Yes, I noticed that my machine cannot play the "Beachhead 2002" game because I don't have the minimum requirements . . . but, I do have those requirements for the "Beachhead 2000 DEMO" although I cannot locate the requirements for the Video Card "memory or manufacturer" needed for this DEMO.

ALSO, (if this means anything) I have MOVED all my desktop icons to my Start Menu, made MY COMPUTER and RECYCLE BIN "invisible" on my desktop, and checked that box in Internet Explorer which disables IT'S icon from my desktop.

In START - PROGRAMS . . . I moved around most of those SHORTCUTS and placed them into FOLDERS already there or into newly created FOLDERS to save space (if this means anything pertaining to my problem ???? ).

Thanks again - just wondering why IE doesn't open and I get the "BSOD."

Additional Information about "Internet Explorer:"

I have AOL 7.0 and MSN EXPLORER on my computer. When I open Internet Explorer (5.50.4807.2300 SP2) it asks me if I want to make it the DEFAULT browser.

An MSN TECH told me not to make it DEFAULT because then I can use MSN EXPLORER for it's features, and open Internet Explorer when I want to surf the web (since MSN Explorer takes up too much space on my screen and I have to use the horizontal scroll bar back and forth to read all my web pages).

Could "not having" IE set as default browser be stopping it from opening when I try to PLAY the "Beachhead 2000 Demo" - or does this not have anything to do with my problem?

Happy Holidays.

PROBLEM SOLVED . . . I uninstalled this DEMO and purchased "DELTA FORCE" (Retail CD ).

Thanks for trying to help with this issue.

HAPPY NEW YEAR.

lol, what a solution.

;-)

Thanks for posting back - All the best for the new year,

John. It not what you say but how you say it that counts...apparently.
