GAC - Internet apps

I have a site with a bunch of directories, each is it's own application. I am developing assemblies to use across all sites. Is the GAC the right place for these assemblies. Is there anything I need to know before I use the GAC? (I never used the GAC before.)

The GAC would be a good place for your assemblies.

You'll need to sign your assemblies with a strong name. You use the sn.exe to generate a key file, then specify that key file in your build properties.

You should also make sure that in your development environment that you explicitly specify the version of your assembly (in the project properties). Recall that the GAC will store multiple versions of your assembly, and if you leave it like the default is, every time you do a build you get another version added to the GAC (lots and lots of clutter).

Thanks, do you treat components and controls the same way? For instance say I create a new type of TextBox and now I want the developers to add it to the toolbar so they can use it throughout the enterprize. Is there a right place to put these type of controls and components? Is the GAC a good place for them?
