New to mac.
Was given a nice old imac g3. I put a maxtor 20gb hard drive in, and now I can't put back on my os system. I have mac os 8.5.1. Is this an upgrade? I have reformated the system just fine before I put in the new hard drive. But, now it just won't load.
My computer does recognize the hard drive, but wont load programs.
I, alos, wonder if the master, slave jumper maybe not set right.
Hope this makes since.
I can use some help.
With much appreciation.
Thanks,

Low end mac does not say you have to partition a 20 gig drive except to use OSX on it.

the 8.5.1 CD may only be an upgrade from 8.5, I am not sure.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

After you insert the drive, you have to start up from the software install disk and run Drive Setup from the cd. It will be in a Utilities folder on the cd.

Make sure to wipe the drive first and select HFS+ (or II) for the file system.
