Apparently 30gb Fujitsu drives manufactured in 2001 have defective controllers. I just had both of mine disappear from my bios. Fortunately I recieved 2 replacement drives... too bad about the data I lost though.
Fortunately it's the electronics that are defective, not the drives, so, if your data is really valuable, you can simply get in another disk and swap the electronics over (some exchange policies will allow you to obtain the replacement before sending back the defective unit so that you can copy your data).
...however, I think that 4.9 million (potential) drives is a dreadful failure rate...
