I have a Dell Optiplex gx520 with Pentium(R) 4 , 3.0 ghz,
1GB Ram running XP pro. I have had back to back 3 of these type of dell machines go out with the same blue screen.
" Hardware Malfunction"; Call your Hardware Vendor for support; NMI: Parity Check/ Memory Parity Error: System Halted.

To me it's sounds like a memory error. So I took the ram out of the bad gx520 and replace with the memory in a good running gx520 and it worked for a while then went out again with the same blue screen error and 2 more of these dells followed along with the same error.

The next bad gx520, I put a new hard drive in it. I am still waiting to see if it will crash, nothing has happen yet.

do you think this a motherboard issue or hard drive from the sound of this.

Have you run a memory diagnostic test on the RAM in question?

Have you run a manufacturer's hard drive utility test on the hard drive(s) in questions. Try these tests first to see if you can narrow it down.

If you download and create the "Ultimate Boot CD", it has most of the major hard drive brands diagnostic tools built in.

So how many of these machines are in your possession? If you placed the memory from a machine that crashed in a machine with a new HDD and there have been no problems, chances are good that it's a hard drive error...or something altogether different.

I would download & run SiSoft Sandra's Burn-in Wizard, it will run the same set of tests over and over again, it's a good test for system stability, let it run for 30 minutes or so and see what happens.

I've done some reading on the Web about your issue and you are not the only one with repeated failures:

I am aware you have a desktop so in my mind the only common thread would be drivers...

I ran the memory diagnostic test and the memory tested out perfect.

The issue is beneath me. I will just call dell.

<sarcasm>Well, if the Dell rep said so, it must be the correct solution.</sarcasm>

Good luck on resolving the issue, and THANK YOU for posting back the resolution, even on an old issue such as this. It is always greatly appreciated when posts are resolved.
