French Language Characters

Does anybody know of software that will allow easy inserting of french characters rather than using the alt+keys approach.

I have heard that there is but don't know where. thanks

You can always use the "Symbol" dialog - Insert/Symbol.

Else, I don't know of anything past fooling your computer into thinking you have a French keyboard, which is a bad idea unless you actually have a French keyboard or can type on one without heeding what the actual keys say they are (although I'm not sure; French keyboards may have extra keys that allow them to do things such as enter "extra" characters - I know Spanish keyboards do).

You can also enter hotkeys for symbols in the Symbol dialog. For example, you can set á as "a, Ctrl-Shift-' " (type a, then type Ctrl-Shift-') and set é and ç likewise ("e, Ctrl-Shift-' " and "c, Ctrl-Shift-, "), etc.

I appreciate your comments, but we have had a new user started here who is claiming, as they do, that there is an application that sits on the desktop. Effectively, just dragging and dropping the characters into whatever, word etc.

There may very well exist one. Try Microsoft's dowloads page (

As for me, I haven't seen anything like this, but that's because I memorized the ASCII codes early on due to studying Spanish... Furthermore, I'd argue that setting hotkeys would be an easier interface than this, especially because it's not third-party.
