Guys,

My XP Pro Laptop is freezing after the POST....it goes through POSt ok and identifies my Drives (albeit it slower than i remember), however after it beeps (the same as it always has) it moves on to tell me that its P4 2200, 512k of cache installed, and then normally checks the cdrom drive for a bootable CD, before continuing to XP Pro. However, it seems to hang after it has checked for and fuond no CD. I have tried to boot from the XP CD and run recovery console, but that doesn't want to run either. IT all started when out of the blue (struggling to remember if i installed something, don't think i did) my Laptop hung during use. Ever since I have had intermittant usage. I know the CMOS battery is dead/dying, as it doesn't retain my date/time at all (perhaps for 10mins after i turn off)

Anyone else got any ideas what could be causing this and how to cure it.

Could be hard ware i suppose (HDD?) however one the occasions it gets into windows its fine, until it hangs again. Temp seems stable.....I'm using an Insyde MobilePRO bios. When i set the BIOS back to DEFAULT SETTINGS before it went in first time, and i assumed that was my battery....however this time it did not. I cannot find any updated BIOS firmware or anything so im at a loss without a definite answer which allows me to move forward.

Any Help appreciated.

CBradshaw,
If you aren't getting the windows XP bootup screen, then it is a hardware problem rather than Windows XP.
Regarding the CMOS battery, most will recharge if you leave them plugged in and switched on for 24 hours solid, doing literally nothing.
If there is anything further wrong your laptop I think it may be a warranty job. Being a laptop however, will make replacing any faulty parts difficult.

John,

Thx for the reply.

I thought hardware, however it definately logs into Windows XP fine when i set the mode to Standard or PIO....so that would narrow it down to..erm..i have no idea.

If it was a dodgy lead, then no data would be sent, if it was HDD then again it would either be a solid problem, or an intermittant, which this isn't....it's 100% successful at bypassing the problem using the aforementioned modes, so im stumped.

Perhaps it never was ATA66/100 compat, and I only believe it was as i set the bios back to defaults.....i know my battery needs replacing, as even when i leave it charging overnight, it still doesn't retain my time settings.

Cheers

Any further help appreciated

CBradshaw,

I have found the website of Insyde Software ( and it doesn't give details of the hard drive controller facilities supplied with their chips as part of the BIOS.
Personally I would check out the manufacturer's website and manual.
