freeze panes

when i try to freeze panes in excel i want the 1st row and 1st column to stay visible; i highlight cell A1 and choose Window>Freeze Panes. but it freezes from fow 7 and column F, it does it on most sheets i don't understand why - any ideas?

Choose cell B2 before freezing, as the freezing starts above and to the left of the active cell.
