Hi,

I need to backup a MS SQL Server database but I am looking for a free or cheap scheduler to close the database before it can be backed up and then to start the database after the backup has finished. I am using Arcserve2000 for NT as the backup software. I realise that I could buy MS SQL Server agent that does this but it costs £422.00 and was wondering if there was some kind of free scheduler for NT that would perform the same function. Any advice appreciated.

Why bother?

If you have SQL 6.5 or above you can get SQL to do a database dump to disk and then get ArcServe to backup that file.

If you get a minor problem you can restore to the database from disk and the tape is for catastrophic server death.

You'll also find it a lot faster and more reliable.
