FPDOS application under XP 1

My client has just scrapped her old Win98 box and replaced it with another, considerably faster (3.4GHz), running XP. Now the FoxPro DOS 2.6 application which she uses has started freezing on her. It's still working fine on other machines on the network, including (apparently) another XP box, albeit slower - 1.8GHz. To be on the safe said, I've done a full rebuild of all the CDX files, even though the point where it's freezing seems to be random & not necessarily database-action-related at all.

Has anyone come across anything similar, or are there any known issues with running FPD2.6 under XP, perhaps related to processor speed? On that train of thought, does anyone know if it's possible to tweak the NTVDM settings to run DOS applications slower/faster, and/or is there perhaps a program that someone has written that can slow a particular application down?

Any suggestions (apart from a rewrite ) most appreciated.

(1) Make sure you have a MEMLIMIT statement in your CONFIG.FP file. I'm using...

MEMLIMIT=20,2048,15360

(2) Try putting FPD in compatibility mode for Win95 or 98. I have it set to Win95 and it is totally stable.

What exactly is freezing? Windows programs when your DOS window is running FoxPro? Or are your keypresses slow?

To get Compatibility Mode (right click on icon, select Properties) you should use Command.com not Cmd.exe. Also try adjusting the Idle sensitivity in the Misc tab and move it more towards the high setting.

Thanks gents.

I already had a MEMLIMIT set, so have experimented with TAMEDOS and all sorts of compatibility permutations but to no avail - the FPD application window just freezes completely, even the clock dies, but Windows itself carries on just fine.

As it is, the problem has gone away - my client decided it was too much hassle and her old machine wasn't that bad, so she's taken it back to the shop... Phew!
