According to a posting by Whil Hentzen on the Universal Thread, FoxTalk will cease publication with the April, 2004 issue.

Well that's sad - I wonder how much influence Whil had on this decision, or whether it's simply due to poor sales.

Thanks for the heads-up Craig. Good first name by the way. [smile]

I would guess poor sales. It was not long ago we could purchase a magazine subscription for about 30 buck a year, and the diskettes were another 20 or so. Once they started posting code on the internet the price jumped about 100 bucks. Today - we can get so much more information on the web for a fraction of the price. It was just a matter of time before those two business model collided with each other.

Thanks for the info, Craig.

I am sorry to hear it, but on the other hand, it is no surprise. FoxTalk has really gone down in quality over the last few years, and it is also much too expensive.

By comparison, FoxPro Advisor gives better value (though I wonder how long it will be before it goes the same way).

Wasn't there some talk somewhere at some point about you getting involved in a VFP e-zine? ;-)
Where are all these creative programmers going to go, when its time to publish their ideas?

Mike,

Yes - I am hoping that this negative could turn into a positive. Now if I could just get the thing ready so that the group working on it could finish it off. I have the domain for it, the server set up for it, and have almost finished putting together the part of the site where we can collaborate on it. Shouldn't be much longer. Haven't really said anything about it in that group for awhile cause I didn't want to make another post saying "we're almost there" again. LOL Just want to finish it up. I'm hoping it will take off once I get out of the way. It was just my luck that I proposed the idea, we started working on it and then i got buried beneath 12 feet of projects. But I believe I have dug myself out and it shouldn't be long before I can start posting in that group again and this thing can start moving.

Mike,

Well, there's always my web site. I am always looking for top-quality articles to publish, and I get many hundreds of hits a day from VFP folk.

Any particular topics?

I have been a subscriber since long before it split off from Database Advisor. I read the thing cover to cover every month, and glean a truckload of info from it. At least usually. I've always felt Advisor was a better value than FoxTalk and contained more useful articles.

But it has dropped off sharply especially in the last year or so. Gee whiz. The issue I just finished only had 3 Advisor Tips in it!

On one hand, we can attribute this to the decline of the Fox user base, but on the other hand - magazines, as well as other 3rd party products stay afloat by subscribers and users supporting them.
FoxPro articles are being replaced by more .NET and 3rd party tools articles. Fine. We need to broaden our scope of tools, but <soapbox> maybe we as developers are more important than Microsoft for perpetuating the usefulness of the tools we use. </soapbox>

Any particular topics?
Ditto. Throw some suggestions out here.
I have seen some of the great articles you have there, but I live in my own world here, in that I develope in-house applications and don't really have a lot of exposure to the outside world's needs. I would love to participate if possible.

slighthaze,
"we're almost there"
Looking forward to it...

Any particular topics?

Sure. Visual Foxpro.

Seriously, folks. If you look at the existing articles, you will see that each one aims to demonstate one particular technique or piece of code, in the most practical way possible. If you have any ideas for articles which will achieve that, run them by me.

I expect this to be of interest mainly to independent consultants and small software companies, because in return for your writing an article, I will give you a small advert for your product or service, or at the very least a place to publish your contact details.

This isn't meant to be an alternative to Foxpro Advisor etc -- just another place where creative Fox folk can publish their ideas.
