After turning off windows media player I heard an audible alert tone when opening an folder from explorer, this was the key. If anyone has the pop up stopper from panicware - disable/uncheck the aggresive popups option. The stopper program puts itself into IE to prevent pop ups and error messages from showing from web sites. It seems that the stopper considers windows explorer as a pop up when clicking on a folder on the left pane and will close the entire explorer interface. Guess it pays to stop listening to rock and roll for 5 minutes
