the faq for setting up dns says to delete the root from forward look up zones and configure forwarders...so is it correct to say that since my external domain is different from my internal domain i won't need any forward look up zones.

No, just delete the . root. You still need your domain name in the forward lookup zone.

(your domain name meaning your windows 2000 AD domain name)

should i name it xxx.local as my domain is or should i name it dns1.xxx.local?
thanks

Hold on...

Have you already got a domain controller? When you DCPROMO a server it asks for the IP of a DNS server so it can create the zone for you?

i deleted the "." from the forward look up zone and then i had no forward lookup zone after that...my domain is xxx.local...so should i name the forward lookup zone xxx.local or dns1.xxx.local when it asks for the name...
thansk

it should be the domainname you use on the network... i would demote and repromote and let windows create the zone

by domain name do you mean the FQDN of my server?

thanks for your help i just named the zone xxx.local, (my domain name) and made it AD Integrated...
this also solved my GPO problme...thanks
