.Forward and vacation command

Hi,
I tried to setup a vacation notice for my mail using the vacation command and .forward file.
My $HOME directory is /usr/local/mydir not /home/mydir.
The system, sendmail, seem to ignore the .forward file, I verified all the permissions, .forward file and mydir directory, according to sendmail but nothing works.

But when I created a new ID with the same setup on another system it works.

What can I check to see if anything is missing with the server?
