I know I can create accents, circumflexes etc by doing a Ctrl ' followed by the letter E or
Ctrl Shift ^ followed by the letter O
or by inserting a symbol

My question is how to stop Word from adding an accent to the letter e when I type the word cafe.

I've searched almost everywhere with no luck.

Are you using Windows XP? When Word automatically changes cafe to café, it will underline the first letter (C). If you mouse-over this underline, and click the down arrow that appears, there will be a menu option for "stop correcting cafe".

Select this, and it should work.

Open Microsoft Word

Click on
Tools - AutoCorrect Options

Select the AutoCorrect tab

In the Replace box, type cafe; in the list below you will have cafe café highlighted, click on Delete, then click on Close.

This will solve your problem.

Or you could go into Tools-Autocorrect-Autocorrect tab, and under Replace as you type, remove the line that changes cafe to café.
