Hello Everyone,

now i backup my machine over the network to my dat tape and it works very well :)

ufsdump -0ful ponti:/dev/nrst0 /dev/share

now I want to rewind or forward my tape and i have tried 2 ways but no one fits for me

mt -f ponti:/dev/rst0 rewind
ponti:/dev/rst0: No such file or directory (it's not working)

ufsrestore -fio ponti:/dev/rst0
Rewinding tape and eject this tape :-(

Does there exist any other way to rewind or forward this dat tape without ejecting ?

for any help i'm happy
best regards
Maurizio

What version of Solaris are you using... I haven't used tape device /dev/rst0 since SunOS days. Solaris default devices for tape drives is /dev/rst/0.

Have you tried to remote login to server ponti and run the mt, ufsdump and ufsrestore commands?

Hello bfitzmai,

thanks for your fast feedback,

here any infomrations on this two machines
solaris 9 i386 / ponti = netbsd 1.6.2 i386

solaris 9 --> backup to NETBSD 1.6.2 dat /dev/rst0

ponti# mt
usage: mt [-f device] command [ count ] :)

ufsdump & ufsrestore = don't exist on netbsd :-(

i can work with ufsdump or ufsrestore from solaris
job's to my netbsd machine

best regards
Maurizio

Since you are using bsd unix... Have you tried dump instead of ufsdump? The options are pretty much the same.

but dump = solaris
and sump = netbsd

are not the same, but why i need to change the dump/ufsdump software, i need to backup me solaris machine, and if a start ufsdump it's working very well....

i'am searching only a option that i can rewind or forrward
me tape, without logon on pinto

best regards
Maurizio

Maurzio...
Not familure with NETBSD... Are you just backing up one partition on your solaris 9 machine.. If so, use /dev/rst0. When the dump is finished the tape will rewind.

Not sure if mt will work across the network. Never tried it. A work around is to run mt on the netbsd machine.

As far as your ufsrestore... Try repositioning the options. Not sure what the -o option is (I'm at home at the moment)... Try ufsrestore -if ponti:/dev/rmt0. This should get you into an interactive restore.

i have found any solution :)

if i make this option it's working very well

ssh pinto mt -f /dev/rst0 rewind = --> to rewind
ssh pinto mt -f /dev/nrst0 fsf 2 = --> jump the 2. archive

and
ufsrestore -fi pinto:/dev/nrst0 = --> to show the 2.archive

yes now it's what i want
thanks for your feedback msg

i wish you a nice evening
see you
Maurizio
