I'm trying to format my external hard drive, which appears as drive "F." It has a virus which I cannot remove and so am going to just wipe everything out and start over.

Problem is that every time I try and format it I get an message that the drive cannot be formatted because it is in use and/or to close any windows where the F drive appears.

I do that, and the only window open is the little format box and I still get the messsage that prohibits me from formatting it.

Advice?

Thanks!

Which OS are you using?

You can restart your computer, insert a boot disk and format drive F using "fdisk". That should work.
