format does not work anymore in Access 20000

How come that my formats do not work anymore in Access 2000? For instance if I want to show the string 0000001234 as 1234 I used in Access 95 the format # but that does not work anymore in Access 2000. Any idea how this come?

If you create a field with a number data type as a long integer, the extra zeros don't show in the table.
