Force file to load into local cache

I have a pdf linked to my site. When I click on it, it loads normally. While the session is still open, if I click on it again (or use the back button) the file comes right up without having to reload. I thought this was automatic, but one my users tells me that the file does have to reload on his machine when he clicks on it the second time. Since this is a big file, reloading is fairly inefficient. Is there some way to keep this from happening?
