C:/Windows/Fonts. Open the Windows fonts folder, and File>Install New Font, navigate to the location of the TTF's and load them up. Don't save fonts to the AICS fonts folder, that's not how it works.

XP has a pretty good system for handling fonts, very straightforward and not buggy. You should not have any trouble doing it this way, at least with TT fonts.

Another place you can download free fonts is at
And you can also install fonts in your XP system from the Control Panel - Fonts option. File - Install font

Once you use a font in Illustrator and you-re done editing the text, convert it to outlines so you will not have any problems if you take your drawing with neat fonts to another machine that dosen-t have those fonsts installed. Remember that fonts only display correctly if the computer where you're working has that font installed.

Tony's suggestion is helpful, but remember ALWAYS keep a copy of the actual text for a backup BEFORE outlining the fonts. Outlining is NOT reversible, and with a backup you can make changes to the text later on if you need to.
