This problem just showed up a couple days ago -
When I download email (Outlook Express) and also some documents into Word or Acrobat, the text (Times Roman) is missing the lower case 'y' character, resulting in something like this:

Thank ou for our earl stor .

If I change the text font to Ariel, the 'y' character is there, resulting in:

Thank you for your yearly story.

I have tried changing default fonts but no luck.

Any help will be appreciated.

Sounds like a corrupted font file. The easiest thing may be to just copy the font file from someone else and replace the one on your computer. You could also try System Restore, to go back before this became corrupted, but I'm not sure system restore catalogs the font files.

If needed (no friends?) provide us with a (temp_ email address, we can mail them.
It is 4 files, each between 240 and 340 K
The solution is out there. [morning]

Hey -

Thanks for the tip. If I did have any friends, they wouldn't know which font files I needed anyway :(.

So if you could, please send them pesky font files to this temp email account ricos00099@hotmail.com.

ok smah, I won't then

Hi guys - thanks for sending the font files but no luck here...

I extracted the four font files to c:\windows\fonts, but when replacing the existing files noticed they were older than my versions but I figured what the hey said yes replace them anyway but the system wouldn't overwrite the third file timesbd.ttf no matter what. I should have taken out the existing files first (renamed them) and/or created a new restore point but when I thought of that it was too late. After overwriting the 3 files that would take, I had absolutely nothing in the times roman document...nada. In WORD it was totally missing from the font menu (big white space).

So we went to system restore and brought it back to the most recent which didn't cover some other changes I'd made since then but no big deal. So now back to same thing... still missing times roman little y.

Since then I went to OFFICE update and installed SP3 (by the way I'm running WORD2000 and OFFICE2000).

I just noticed in WORD the font is now Times New Roman and it is missing my little y. Change to another font it's there... back to Times New Roman - gone. I'm beginning to think I could probably live without it, but in this day and age I shouldn't have to should I?

I have mailed them again, in a zip, compare them.
Backup yours somewhere.
Boot in command or safe mode to replace. The solution is out there. [morning]
