Folder View Settings will not save!. 1

I have my Windows 2000 Pro set to "remember each folder's view settings", but it does not remember them. In some places I want icons and in others I want a detailed list. I do not want all my folders to be the same. I can resize a folder window, position it and set the view I want. As long as I do not shut off the OS it remembers the settings, but if I restart the OS, it forgets everything. I found a lot of info online for makeing two specific changes to the registery to solve this problem, but that info applies ONLY to XP, not to 2000 Pro. Any suggestions?

By default, Windows 2000 remembers the customized settings for 400 folders. After that limit is reached the oldest begin losing their customization to make room for the newest.

Increase the customization limit from 400 to ....:

4000 Folders

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]
"BagMRU Size"=dword:00000fa0
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam]
"BagMRU Size"=dword:00000fa0

8000 Folders

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]
"BagMRU Size"=dword:00001f40
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam]
"BagMRU Size"=dword:00001f40

Also, you must: Delete these two keys, reboot then re-set your folder options, as you current customizations will be lost.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags

Windows remembers 400 folder settings. When that number is reached some settings aren't retained any longer. You can change this to 8000, for example, by adding the edit above to the registry.

bcaster, I am a little unsure as to how to send a response to your response as this is my first time in this forum. Is this the proper way to ask a further question on the same subject?

I used regedit and followed the path to registery key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam] Once I reach that point and open that folder I look on the right side of the screen and see:

"Default RegSz HAL"

"HAL" is the name designation for my computer. There are no other registery entries on the right side of the page.

There is one other sub-folder under, "ShellNoRoam" and that sub-folder is called "MUICache".

The registery entry: "[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]" does not exist at all. After the "Windows" subfolder, the only sub-folders are "ShellNoRoam", as mentioned above, and "Current Version". There is no "Shell" subfolder.

I also did not understand if there was supposed to be a place for me to change the values on the right side of the screen right which were under the ShellNoRoam and Shell subfolders, or am I supposed to delete what is there and replace it with the entire line.

What should I do about the non-existant subfolder called "Shell"? I feel confident about inserting items, but I just want to be sure I understand clearly before I start doing so. (Reformatting the entire drive is not an option and would take weeks to do so and reload all my programs and data files.) Thank you for your help. James

Copy/paste the below into notepad and use File, Save as.., to save the file as bags_fix.reg :
