On a W2K client you can run ipconfog /flushdns from a command prompt. Does anyone know if there is an equivalent for NT4 Server?

I have a Server in a remote location that isn't registering the correct address for a mailserver that I recently changed the DNS entries for with my ISP. The new address has been live for 48 hours, and shows up correctly just about everywhere else except this server.

I need if possible to manually flush the cache or something similar to make it discover the new address.

Thanx

Gary

I don't think there is a way to flush the DNS cache on that server without rebooting it, but you could remotely edit that system's host file, which should effectively change the address it uses to resolve the name.

Or you could change the amount of time that the server caches the DNS queries it has made. There is a registry key you can create at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

called "DNSCacheTimeout". Make it a DWORD, set it to decimal and choose the number of seconds that you want queries to be cached for. So if you want the time to be 5 minutes, make the value 300 seconds. NT systems that still have IE 3.x on them have a default time of 30 minutes, so that may have been your problem.
