I have a HP Pavilian 514X Pc and I am having Issues with the floppy drive.

I have installed 3 Different floppy drives (2 Brand New and 1 used) in the pc so far. All are working and tested in other Computers.

The Pc is running windows XP Home SP1. Windows Sees the floppy drive and when I look in Device Manager it is displayed under the floppy controller and drice settings.

The problem is when I put a floppy into the drive and attempt to access the floppy it prompts me in insert a floppy disk ? (when there is already a disk in the drive)!!

This happens to all 3 Floppy drives. The floppy is also set correctly in the BIOS.

I am going to attempt to call HP for Support. can anyone please advsie me on how to proceed to correct this problem???

IT Appears that Way I have tried a different cable and have reset the BIOS.

JUst got off the phone with HP Support what A Joke. this is way I don't suggest to BUY HP for my customers.

Just remember, it's not the techies at HP that are at fault, it is HP as a company.

I worked for HP doing tech support, and they gave us no training at all. They taught us how to log calls, etc, but no training.

Anyway, it's likely the motherboard.

Don't forget the power side as well. Try a different power connector off the power supply.

And you have tried to boot off a floppy to eliminate the OS as a problem? And get the drive light when it is accessing and not at other times? And can feel the drive vibrating as it is accessing?

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

I have tried to Boot off the floppy with no luck. The drive does vibrate when accessing the drive but it does not read the floppy in the drive.

the lite is also displayed when the floppy is in the drive. The messages still prompts me to insert a disk when one is already present.

If the floppy light is continuously lit u could also check if u have the floppy cable reversed, i do that all the time when i build new computers its annoying lol

With the tests you have made, sounds like the floppy controller is bad or the cable is bad. Only other simple issue is CMOS set for 720.

Never mind! You have to use your floppy drive to install it and that doesn't work. Sorry 'bout that.

Yeh addidng to Venomlites post, it is definately worth checking, I remember spending along time getting a floppy drive to work with a 486 I rebuilt

What to do is put a boot disk in the floppy drive and set floppy as first boot device in BIOS

Try putting the floppy ribbon cable different ways around on the Motherboatrd connector and the floppy connector

There can only be four different configurations right? and one will be correct

I hope im making senese but a continuinly lit floppy drive in my experience does indicate the ribbon cable is in wrong as Venomlite said

Good luck

If that fails possibly faulty motherboard connector

My Apologies if this is way over the level of expertise in this thread.......but would like to ask something silly......
Is the Floppy disc write protected.....have you tried other floppy disc's(maybe I missed this answer earlier)....
