Howdy.

I am running RedHat 8.0. I have 5 IP addresses. I am using a switch between my DSL modem and the server and my workstaion.

I am running two domains each with their own IP. I was using the built in NIC. I assigned two different IP's to the one NIC. Everything was fine. I put in a second NIC. RedHat saw it. I moved one of the IP's to the new NIC. The web pages are still served up.

My question, don't know if it is a problem since both sites are being served up, but now in my e-mail I'm getting a lot ARPWatch messages with the subject of: Flip Flop (domainname).
It then lists the the IP address with the the Ethernet/MAC address of one of the NICs shows the old Ethernet/Mac address of the other card. A few minutes, a couple hours, or a few seconds can go by and another message showing it basicly the same message with the Ethernet/MAC swapped.

I've tried assigning the MAC address to the IP address/Eth0 & Eth1. Same thing happening.

Judging by the behavior you describe, ARPWatch is functioning normally. ARPWatch is a monitoring tool that maintains a database of IP address/MAC address pairings and reports any changes by email. By your moving the IP address from one card to another, you have changed the IP address/MAC address pairings of your machine.

If you are not running it locally, perhaps your ISP is.

I'd get my IP assignments stable, then update the ARPWatch databases. Want the best answers? Ask the best questions: TANSTAAFL!

sleipnir214,

Thanks for the quick reply. Rereading my post I noticed I did not ask a direct question so I will do that now. I also did not mention that this started when I put the second NIC in on 1/2/3 and it has been happening every since.

I'm running my own DNS and have been delegated the in-addr.arpa file. My IP's are stable.

My question -- What is causing the Ethernet/MAC address to keep flip floping between the IPs/Domains?
