Hi everyone,

What PRACTICAL advantages are there of flat screen monitors over CRT ones.

I have heard of 2 which are of particular interest to my company. One that they cause less eye strain as there is less flicker. The other is that they are better for privacy as you cannot see them properly unless you're sitting right in front of them, so people standing at the side/in front of you see less than with CRT.

Your feedback would be apreciated.

Regards,
Jay/UK

I'm assuming that you're referring to LCD monitors.
If so, they take up less space, consume less electricity, have no display distortion, and produce less glare.

WRT flicker, a CRT monitor is flicker free when its refresh rate is set to at least 75 Hz(85 Hz preferred).
And all currently produced CRT monitors are capable of displaying std. resolutions(800x600 and 1024x768) at 75 Hz or better.

Some advantages:

- consumes less power
- less strain on the eyes, although many CRT's at high refresh rates (85Hz) are competitive
- takes up less space than most CRT's
- perfect for office use

Some disadvantages:

- stuck at one resolution
- Not as sharp in text as a CRT with low dot pitches
- not preferred for serious gamers

I'm not so sure about your second point, but the flatter screen doesn't show as much to the side as the curved screen of a CRT. However, you don't have to be directly in front of an LCD to see it.

Hope that gets you started...

All good points above.
I am on to my second LCD, I have a new AOC 17" LCD plus a
19" CRT Belinea upstairs.
LCD's are into there 3rd/4th generation now, many of the reasons for not getting an LCD have either gone or improved.
The main disadvantages are: that LCD's were not capable of displaying particularly high resolutions (when compared to CRT's)
And: The screen response times were very slow.
(both disadvantages effecting GAMERS in particular)
These problems have with design been minimized, improvements in dot pitch, capable resolution and response times are all much better than they used to be.
Now it is possible to have the best of both worlds, but if the question is changed to which is the better picture all round, then I'm afraid CRT's still have it.
But for ME, the advantages out outweigh the disadvantages and the gap between the two is closing fast.
