Are you trying to replace the existing heatsink or does it not have one at all? My processor (Athlon 800) is a slot A and there are spots on one side for metal clips to fit into. The clips go around the heatsink, which usually has a fan attached to it. If you buy a heatsink for a slot A processor it should come with two metal things that are kinda shaped into a U. Then you fit the whole thing together and put the clips into the slots on the processor. Make sure you use some thermal grease as it greatly improves the ability of the heatsink to do it's job. Hope this helps.
With the system turned off but still plugged in earth yourself on the metal casing.
Once the processor and heatsink are removed clean off ALL the old thermal paste/tape
Fit new heatsink/fan with a fine layer of Thermal paste (no need to use too much)
Turn on the PC before you replace the side cover to observe correct fan operation
Check temperatures to determine if the heatsin/fan are working properly (that they are fitted correctly and making a good contact with the processor body)
