Hello, I was hoping someone could help me figure out why the size of our \\exchangeserver\microsoft information store\first storage group has gone from a steady 58MB to over 9 GB in one night.

We have recently installed symantec email security and have been quarantining items. I wish to try to get the size back down to around under 1 GB though.

thanks

Probably want to contact Microsoft of Symantec Antivirus.
Im assuming you doing a full backup of the information store which should truncate the exchange logs.
The only think I can think of you are backing up the mailboxes at the brick level and AV software has made copies of mail items form some reason and that has increased your brick level backup size

Yes that is what we are thinking too. We cant think of anything that we changed however on the specific date to make the store increase like that. Symantec AV and email security were up for over 2 weeks at that point. None of the math is matching up. I can see it going up a little but to go from < 100 MB to 9GB is a little ridiculous.

Other things we have been working on are 2 exchange server replications, releasing a few thousand quarantied emails to an admin account (which size is under 200MB)...thats about all.

Time to call Symantec, again

brick level is what, exactly?

Brick level = every individual email.

If your Store is 58MB it is tiny. Compare the backup logs and check event log.

Well we are backing up each individual's email boxes as well. Through Veritas BEX these are a completely different selection. The brick level should be done through MS Excahnge mailboxes, but the microsoft information store\first storage group (priv1.mdb) shouldn't have anything to do with brick level emails.

Naturally our regular MS mailboxes do increase over time....but the first info store went from like 50MB to 9 Gigs..... something else is going on here then AV making copies....
