Firmware for DVD and CD writers????

IN THE FIRMWARE UPGRADE NOTE, GENERALY THE MANUFACTURER SPECIFIES THE REASONS AND BENEFITS OF UPGRADE. THAT CAN BE FOR SOME COMPAIBILITY ISSUS SORTED OUT. IN A LAYMANS WAY OF THINKING.. THIS IS LIKE - WHAT A BIOS FOR A MOTHERBOARD.
THEN THE QUESTION OF WHAT IS DRIVERS ?... JUST LIKE MOTHER BOARD DRIVERS... THESE PHERIPHERALS DO HAVE DRIVERS...
MAY BE SOME ON ELSE CAN EXPLAIN IN BETTER TERMINOLOGY.. ramani :-9

I went to ricohs site (I have a 7200A drive) and it didn't say what the firmware did. It just said its not mandatory and don't need to download unless drive isn't working.
