I personally swear by Zone Alarm. The basic version is free for home use........
I am also using XP Pro and I find they work fine together.
Can't comment on alternatives, I've always been happy so never felt the need to try anything else !

I've used Zone Alarm as well and would probably swear by it. Had no idea the home version was free though! Have to check into that right now!
