hello

I have been using the free and pro versions of zone alarm firewall and am now finding that I would like to block and allow access to certain ports on my computer, not just control programs.

Is there a free/cheap alternative to zone alarm that will allow this functionality?

I recommend using a hardware solution. Any standard SOHO broadband internet router should do the job for you. Basically, these devices are a very simple (and effective) firewall, in that they automatically allow network traffic which originates from within your local network (or your only computer), and automatically block all network traffic which originates from another location on the internet.

This effectively allows normal internet web browsing, e-mail access, and so forth while sheltering your computer from the wide range and sheer volume of unsolicited network traffic from the internet.

Many standard SOHO broadband interntet routers also include additional firewall options which can be configured to block or allow network communication on specified port numbers and in either direction.

Additional filtering or configuration options may also be available in these very inexpensive devices.

Thats exactly what I use. I use a routers built in firewall. I use linksys's lower brand network everywhere which you can pick up at walmart for around 40 dollars. Just if you get it be sure to download and upgrade it to the newest firmware for the original firmware on it sucks. After i upgraded the firmware on this one it has worked perfect ever since.

You can allow/block specific ports with ZoneAlarm.
