Hi!!!!

First time VPN setup, small office, wanted to know if its the same if i use a router or a firewall (since dont have big budget i was going with D-link router (60-80dlls) or D-link firewall (200 dlls) ) only want to conect a couple of remote users, the router has a firewall and capability to do vpn but the price well, it varies a lot, is there to much of a security difference???

Thanks a lot!

Mostly in the granularity of security that can be applied. Firewalls can restrict traffic based upon more criteria, such as source/destination, port, and direction. They also generally support much larger access lists.

SOHO routers like Dlink and Linksys will block incoming traffic and may offer some web filtering, but just aren't as robust. Depending upon your needs, this might well be adequate.

lgarner, thank you for your promt response!!

So, if im going with a brand like linksys or Dlink you think i should go with the firewall then? the thing is that I don't want to spend a lot but I don't want to do a lousy job just to save a few bucks. Can you recomend something? is Netgear firewall a little bit better than linksys or dlink? I mention this "netgear" because i saw a thread with that firewall and just got curious.

Once again, thanks for the advice
