Is there a way on a Definity G3i to run a test to tell you the distance that a phone is away from the system or to an open or a short in the wiring.

No! You would need cable analyzing equipment like a Tempo "Sidekick" and/or a Time-Domain-Reflectometer (aka--TDR)to do that. The Definity can run diagnostics for connectivity, but if you wish to drill down to finer levels you have to have the toy boxes.
