Filter by Form Techniques

Currently I'm developing a Customer Database in Access XP - but with the need to 'save down' in A97 when it's finished.

The database will have very little in the way of existing menu and tool bars because I expect the database to be used by people with very little database use experience.

The main customer database form has fields (some text, some option, some combo selected) for all sorts of information - and this may need to form the basis for some simple statistical information for different users.

I thought my quest was simple...

What I want to do is replicate the actions of the main toolbar button actions for 'Filter by Form' and 'Apply Filter'. But I can't seem to find a simple way.

Can it be done without the toolbar buttons? Or is the safest cop-out to just have a special toolbar which includes these buttons?

TIA

Chris

Here is one option. Have a command button with a click event of DoCmd.ApplyFilter (FilterName or Query).

I have used a combo box to select a specific filter (query) and was applied with the AfterUpdate event.

What do you plan on using for a condition to filter by?

The biggest problem is that I want them to be able to filter on any and/or combination! Hence the filter by form.

Simple 'quick' searches on name or phone number are available already with a simple search system. I couldn't use this 'simple' system for the 'big' search because the select statements would have been extremely unwieldy.

Not knowing how individual users may want to search or generate statistics, I had to take the 'hell or high water' route of trying to use the filter by form and apply filter technique.

I did have an idea fairly similar to yours at first, but the very severest difficulty (insurmountable actually) was to get the starting with filter by form to operate!

At the moment, I am using the 'mini-toolbar' but because there is so little toolbar use needed in the db, there is a good chance that the user might miss it. Short of a thumping great multi-colured and bright highlighted label telling then that the toolbar is there, I'm a bit stumped!

More thoughts?

Chris
