Hello everyone,

I have just set up a netowrk that is running an XP home box, 2 windows 2000 pro boxes, 2 win98 SE boxes and a Windows ME box. I wanted to share some files across the network so I downloaded onto the Windows 2000 box and then put the files in a sharee folder. I then added all the users on the network and gave full permissions to that folder. I can access the shared folder on the win XP home box and the windows 2000 box but I can't see the shared folder on my Windows 98SE box or the Windows ME box. I can see the computer in the workgroup and I can access the shared internet using any of the computers but alas I cannot seem to figure out how to see/access the shared folder with the windows 98SE and windows XP boxes. Anyone have any ideas on this one?

Thanks

Are you just not seeing share - or are you getting prompt for password? If password prompt, you need an account on 2k machine with same username/password as you log onto 98/ME boxes

Have 98/ME machines got client for microsoft networks installed, TCP/IP, have an IP address, members of the same workgroup. You are logging on to the network on 98/ME (not just escaping/cancelling logon). Can you ping 2k machine from the 98/ME machines.

I am not seeing the shared folder and I also cannot navigate to it using the path. For some reason it doens't seem to be shared on the ME or 98 machines. The computers have users set up on the win2k box that's not a problem, yes Microsoft Networks is installed, Yes TCP/IP is installed and yes the computers have their own unique IP addresses. Also yes I am typing in the password for windows networking and the computers are all part of the same workgroup, called WORKGROUP. I can ping all the computers on the network from any of the boxes to any of the other boxes. Additionally I have 3 printers that are set up on the win 2k box that are all being shared across the network with no problems, including the win98 and winME boxes. There must be something set up incorrectly regarding the file sharing but I'll be damned if I can figure out what it is =-( Can anyone think of something that would cause this kind of problem?

Must admit I've never heard of situtation where machine can see a printer share but not a folder/drive share. Not really sure what to suggest. Common suggesting for 9x/ME machines with network problems is just to remove & reinstall all networking components (this has worked for me in the past - but in cases where 9x machine couldn't see the network at all).

You say you can't navigate to it using the path - do you mean typing \\machinename\sharename in run box on 9x/ME machine (if not, try this). You could also try mapping drive to share using net use (you may get a helpful error message..).

Is file and printer sharing installed on 9x/ME machines? (shouldn't matter, as trying to access share, not make share, but you never know..)

The shares were likely created as Administrative shares. (The ones that have "$" signs on them). Add new shares and avoid the $ sign naming at the end. Shares with a "$" as the last character are hidden.

Hello everyone,

Thanks for all your help. None of the suggestions mentioned seemed to be the problem. I still don't know exactly what the problem was or what it is that fixed it but after numerous hours of trying different configurations and network setups it seems to work now. I'm still not sure what combination of installtion/removal/modifications resulted in the fix but it is all working now. Thanks for all the help.
