How do you tell windows 7 to open office document in internet browser window and not open in MS Office?

There used to be an advanced option for folder file types and internet explorer, this has all changed and I can't find the option.

thanks,

If you want to make it a permanent thing have a look here.

This old article might be interesting too.

How to configure Internet Explorer to open Office documents in the appropriate Office program instead of in Internet Explorer

but does that then mean if I click on an XLS/CSV extention file it will always open in IE?

Even if i wan't obtainig the file from the web?

I don't want to associate those files with IE, I just wan't IE to open them when from the web.

Yes, unless you change the Association back to Office etc.

What if you right-click on any file with the extension .xls or .csv and take the Open With option but do not set it as a permanent option? Or what if you use the File/Open in IE? My experience in Windows 7 is that the Office program still opens the file.

What you want to do seems to be tied up with the "Browse in same window" setting which is not available in Windows 7.

Configure Internet Explorer to open Office documents in the appropriate Office program

The "Browse in same window" check box is unavailable for 2007 Office file types after you install the "Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats"

You can look at posts like these to see if there are any options you can use?

Maybe you can find the answer that you want in the Office Forums?

Great so Office 2007 & Windows 7 is a downgrade in terms of functionality.

MS have wasted the last 5 years bringing out software and OS's that look fancy, and have had loads of suff moved around, but the bottom line is they are less functional.

1. Can't open XLS in browser window any more
2. Cant insert image from scanner in MSO2007 anymore without writing a damn macro.
3. Cant export reports in MS access to XLS files anymore

And I'm sure I'll find some more to complain about as I get to use it more!

So my advice to anyone out there with a fairly decent machine running Windows XP & Office 2003.

Do yourself a favour DO NOT upgrade or change it for a new machine!!!!

Before writing it off you should at least check the Office Forums.

Can you make use of an IE Add-on like this one?

"Open IT Online is an extension for Firefox, Flock and Internet Explorer that allows to open and edit your documents from everywhere! Open IT Online Lite allows you to open documents and images online without the need of any software to be installed. Open IT Online Lite supports Zoho, ThinkFree and Vuzit online services. It handles: - Documents (*.doc, *.rtf, *.odt, *.sxw) - Spreadsheets (*.xls, *.csv, *.ods, *.sxc) - Presentations (*.ppt, *.pps, *.odp, *.sxi) - Images (*.jpg, *.gif, *.png)"

Scan and edit a document
Install Microsoft Office Document Imaging

Hey, i'm not writing it off, i'm aloud to whinge aren't I ;-)

The scan image isn't an issue I was more than capable of following the instructions to create the macro and add an icon to the tool bar (or should I call it ribbon?)

It's just ridiculous that they took this 'used every single day' function out of normal users reach!

Well as it was the bosses machine, I spose it made me look like I earned my keep and showed I could adapt to new technology and still find solutions for company IT issues.

I might like to give MS an "oops up side it's head" sometimes, but they do keep me in a job, so I realise what side my bread is buttered!

I won't install an add-on, I don't like toolbars/plugins/add-ons or anything that could breach my privacy or infect my machine!

I'll just have to put up with the damn CSV/XLS opening in office, cest la vie!

At least I know it's not me and it is a removed feature!

Thanks for your time linney, always appreciated!

By the time you get on top of Office 2007, Office 2010 will be around to give you more headaches. The Beta version has recently been released, so you can expect that the final version will be out in 2010. At least the name has some logic in it.
