Hello All-

I don't know if this is the best place to post this question, but is there a file with windows where I could look at it to see what version of windows someone is running? I would like to have a program decifer this file to see what version of Windows someone is running. My company has problems with different types of windows applying updates to their program. They have a couple of files that have to change directories, and if there was a way to see what version of Windows someone is running, we could just move those files and save the customers from calling in to fix the problem. Any help is apprecaited. Like I said, this may not be the best place to post this, as I may need to post it in a programming section, but maybe someone has the answer.

Thanks. Jason Wichman

I don't know of a specific file that will be consistent for all versions of Windows. You can however use some VB to determine the version. Here is a link to a Microsoft article with the code. You will need to cut and paste the link into the address bar to get the entire link.
There is also an OS environment variable but this is not very granular. For example Windows 2000 displays as Windows_NT. Type echo %OS% at a command prompt to see the results. Kevin Mattson

Thanks for the help guys. I don't know why I didn't think of the ver command, but thanks. I also got a response from a VB forumn. The guy gave me all the code to do it in vb, really neat.

Thanks again. Jason Wichman
