I have several new XP Pro workstations which do connect great to Novell 3.12 using MS Netware Client (yipee)..BUT although I have used the netware FLAG command to make DOS files on the server shareable, XP Pro locks the file when it loads it, and prevents others from reading!!! It all worked fine under 98!! PLEASE HELP ME. This DOS system is THE CORE for my business at the moment.

best advise - dont use xp then
it's going be flaky

if you must use it then make sure the ipx settings on client are set to proper frame type and that the caching settings etc are turned off

Thanks Terry. I have tried not using XP. First I tried the MS VirtualPC to set a Windows 98 Virtual Machine...It won't logon to the server...next I tried scrubbing XP and installing 98 on the new machine...It won't boot (NDIS errors and Protection Errors). I am getting to the end of my options list with no solution in sight, which means I now have 9 USELESS Fujitsu machines:-(

Can you expand a little on what you said about the frame and cache seetings on the XP client??

Thanks

ok - afraid i dont have an xp near me so can get exact settings

i would probably go with the 4.83 sp 2 or 3 client
dont use 4.9

in the protocols go to the ipx - check the frame type - cx from auto to 802.2 or .3 pending what server is running (3.12 should be 802.2) - also set address - this is the one in load line of autoexec - ie c003 or suchlike

in advanced on client - something like caching files - set these to no - xp will cache them by default

ok Terry, can we follow this one through? How do I know which client I am using, and how do I get and install the version you have suggested. Also, I don't seem to be able to access the properties settings for the CLient under control panel.

I have set the frame to 802.2 to match server...no difference. I am using the Client that came with the XP install disk.

Thanks .

that's a microsoft client - that's the devil incarnate
no good to man nor beast

go to novell's site and download the client - try to get 4.83 - you may need to look around abit you will see sp3 - not sure if that's a full install

4.9 may work but you would need to do a custom install as it will default to ip only and you need ipx
