We have a lan at home and I wrongly assumed that if I disabled file sharing for my root directory, C:\, that everything in it was private -- in other words, everything on the hard drive and no one could access my computer from the other computers. This is not the case. This only seems to affect the documents in that folder and not subsequent directories. You can have C:\ unshared but have folders in C:\, eg the desktop, that are shared.

If a specific subfolder share exists, it will still exist after you disable sharing of the root of C. The easist way to disable all sharing is to remove File & Printer sharing from Network properties in Control panel.

It's not often I get a one-click solution. Thanks.
