I know that similar topics have been addressed many times on this forum but I have not yet been able to solve the problem, so here goes.

I am trying to network two XP Pro machines using Windows File Sharing. Neither computer is showing up in the other's "Network Neighborhood" despite having the same value for "Workgroup." One of the XP machines is able to see and browse a network connected Win 98 machine.

Firewalls on both XP machines are disabled. Both are running SP2. I can ping both machines from the other by IP address. I can ping neither machine by netbios name. The Win 98 machine can ping and be pinged by netbios name. Both have shares established with no restrictions (Full Access granted to user "Everyone"). Both machine can access the internet through the same shared internet connection.

In addition to not seeing either machine in "Network Neighborhood," neither machine returns any results for the "net view" command. Running the "net view" on the local machine does return the list of shares for the local machine."

I know I am missing something obvious but I cannot see it right now. I am going to check the network hardware tonight but I know that previously another WinXP machine was able to communicate from the same position without a problem. I would appreciate any suggestions you might offer.

I have filed this tutorial with no success.

Have you tried this detailed troubleshooter?

Some anti virus software have hidden firewall components too. Apart from the SP2 firewall it may not be good enough to disable a firewall you may have to uninstall it completely. Of course firewalls can be configured to allow access to your LAN.

I finally was able to work again on the computer this weekend. It was the firewall through Norton Internet Security suite that came pre-installed on the machine. I adjusted some settings and now it is working ok. Thanks for the help.
