I need some advice on moving files within a file server structure. I need to move files away from one server (server1), then reconfigure that server (remove local drive and add san connection), then move files back to it (2 moves). I also need to move files from another server (server2) to that first server (consolidation). Maintaining shares and permissions is imparative, also links to individual server names are important. DFS is the solution thats been suggestted. So that i can have Server1 and Server2, both under a file server (server3) I've looked into using the FSMT, something that seems a little over complicated, also does not simplfy things because under each DFS share all shares are shown. Has anyone had any luck with this tool and maintaining shares, or is there another way people managed to do such a thing? We were also thinking about copying the shared files to the SAN and somehow restoring the shares after the windows reinstall. Any Ideas how to go about this?

The permissions are obviously the hard thing here. You can easily copy your files wherever you want to.

I would download a copy of XCACLS from Micrsoft.com and use that to document all of your file permissions. You can dump the XCACLS report to a txt file. Save this report just in case you run into troubles and need to manually fix anything.

You can use ROBOCOPY (free Resource Kit tool from MS) to copy the files and the permissions too. Using the /COPYALL switch RoboCopy will copy: Data,Attributes, Timestamps, Security=NTFS ACLs, Owner info, aUditing info.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Robocopy will do shares too?? thats the most important. I would like to redo the whole share structure, but others would have issues with that. FSMT is cool, ill check out robo copy. I am aware that share permissions are actually shared in the registry and not on the drive it self (nothing to do with NTFS). I got a few weeks, ill start off with those suggestions of yours.

No, I don't believe RoboCopy will do the shares but it can preserve the NTFS permissions.

I hope you find this post helpful.
