Please can anyone help with this really annoying problem?

When i go to a File Open or File Save dialog, all the files and folders are listed in reverse alphabetical order, and i have to right click in the dialog and go to Sort By Name to put them back in the right order.

I've no idea why they've suddenly defaulted to displaying this way, and no idea how to revert it.

If it's any consolation, I'm having the exact same problem - but only in some dialogs - most notably my iTunes "Add File" dialog. My Office "Open..." and "Save..." dialogs seem to be fine.

I also checked out a couple other forums, and tried some different ways of fixing the problem, but they were no help.

Sorry, Marc. Hopefully someone will come along and tell us how to fix this...

Open Windows Explorer to the folder containing your documents.

. Tools, Folder Options, View, and be certain 'Remember each folders's view settings' is checkmarked.

. Set the view exactly as you want. This should be preserved in the File dialogue boxes in later applications.

If not, you have hit your folder customization limit. Service Pack 2 resets this to 5,000 from the XP original setting of 400.

TweakUI, a free powertoy from Microsoft, will let you increase the folder customization limit quite easily:
It is also easy enough to do by hand using regedit:

Check. Those settings were already as you indicated. I reset them (unchecked-then-checked) but it was no good. There's no way my folder customization limit is at 5000 already, and one of the folders this has happened to is one I visit quite frequently (the criterion for discarding customizations).

I presume this is hapenning from Office apps? From either File, Open or File, Save, click on the View button (second from right next to Tools) and choose Detailed View. Now click on the 'NAME' coloumn header. This will reverse the list again. Note that you can click on any of the coloumns and reorder in that coloumns view: I usually prefer to work in date order (newest at top) rather than alphabetically.

bcastner - Your solution worked - well, of course it did: sometimes hitting the delete button and going from scratch really is the most effective way. Thanks.

tf1: Excuse me - I don't mean to be rude, but I did say that my Office apps were fine, actually (even though I know this is marcdoyle's thread). I was doing that manually (in my other apps - Office, as I said, was fine), but it wasn't remembering that I had put it that way the last time.

linney, your article sorted the problem out for me, many thanks :) part of the shellstate key in the registry had changed from 01 00 00 00 to FF FF FF FF which was causing the problem.
