I've seen earlier posts similar to this, but mine doesn't resemble any of them exactly.

Basically I just get a blank window where the Windows search tool is meant to appear. Not the web search, the files, text etc. search.

missing link or something?

cheers,

Bill.

Start with IEFix, as it registers some critical DLLs that are necessary for Search:
If no joy, repair the Search feature:
Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files from the I386 folder. (This fix will require you to have your Win XP CD).

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders. You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf folder.

Ran IEFix - couldn't be bothered with reinstalling IE.

Than ran the srchasst.inf, no change so reset, FIXED IT! Many thanks!

Why does Windows do this sort of thing? Am I living with a nightmare OS? Do Mac/Linux users suffer these same random problems?

Cheers

Bill.

I apologize for not explicitly stating that a reset was required.

"Do Mac/Linux users suffer these same random problems?"

Yes. That is why God created web-forums and newsgroups.

Best wishes,
Bill Castner
