File > Open application crash

Hi,

Odd one this:)
New HP Compaq 6710b laptop downgraded from Vista to XP Pro SP2 with a fresh install - Format C: followed by the HP restore CD followed by all updates.

If you try and open something via File > Open in several applications (Outlook 2003, IE7, Roxio Cd Creator) and click around various folders, the application will crash out suddenly. No error, no event in event log.
This only seems to happen if the File > Open dialog is in List view. Detail view seems fine.

I've used ShellExt to disable all Context Menus - still does it.
Laptop has Office 2003 SP3, Mcafee V8 Patch 10, WinZip V9SR1, Roxio EasyMedia Creator 9 and a few other apps.

Any clues?
