File encryption removal after format 1

Hi guys,
i have a bunch of excel files that i can do nothing about, because my client forgot to tell me that the files were encrypted, so i made a back up and formated the pc.(the names show in green color after the format) - (upgraded from win 2000 to XP)
Now there is no way to open, move, copy ..... these files. Is there ANY way to recover them?
