Just upgraded an accounting package (MYOB Premier), the new Company Files have the extension .MYO but I seem unable to associate it with anything. Right click, Open With - MYOB does not appear in the list of programs so I click Browse and navigate to the executable but when I click open (or double click) it just returns to the list of programs I can choose from, nothing has changed! I have also tried associating through Tools, Folder Options, File Types, Change with the same result, MYOB does not appear so I navigate to the executable and it returns to the previous list of programs and MYOB does still not appear.

Thank you in advance,

Daniel.

it sounds as if the application didnt install properly. can you remove it and reinstall doing a full install vs. an upgrade?

does the program have an icon in the programs group, and if so, does it run properly? Can you open the files once the application is running?

Hi, try to force it by changing the properties of the file extensions directly into the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts

choose your extension, configure the openwithlist and openwithprogids values to match your application as defined in the HKLM\software\classes

Hope this helps. Please let know if this resolve your issue

Thank you for your replies. The same thing has now happened on three different machines.

I thought the same thing but was hesitant to do it as the installation instructions state "Do not uninstall your previous version of MYOB Premier unitl the newer version is installed" ??? I think this is to make it easier for the majority as a new install will require the backup and manual placement of some files. Will do this as a last resort.

Yes, yes and yes. The program works flawlessly but some people here prefer to have shortcuts to specific company files on their desktop (rather than opening from inside the program) or wherever because they find navigating to difficult (the files are all in different locations across the network)

JFBouchard - Will try the reg fix once I can get onto one of the machines for a while.

Thanks for the link linney, will try there too but I am not confident they can help, this release is only days old.

Thanks again.

Daniel.

After poking around in the forum that linney posted the link to I found this thread:
which looks like it may relate to your problem. Seems that two word file names do not work in the target path of the shortcut.

Hope that helps!

Thanks BadFrog but I can't get it to work just yet, I am not too sure how to link to network files in the Target path. The company files are stored on different computers across the network but accessed by all on the network.

e.g. Say the path is \\generator2\pete's user files\myob files\company files\incubator.myo

Playing around with cmd & command windows I guess it should be something like this-

E:\Premier9\Myobp.exe \\GENERA~2\PETE'S~1\MYOBFI~2\COMPAN~1\INCUBA~2.MYO

MYOBFI~2 This appears with a 2 after the tilde even though it is the only directory (or file) with that name (or similar). Not sure about that.

PETE'S~1 Is the apostrophe ok as well?

I think we are on the right track though, the computer thinbks for a while before opening the application as if it is trying to find a file to open but I may have the path wrong.
Thanks again.

Daniel.

JFBouchard - Those registry entries appear exactly as they should.

openwithprogids - I am stabbing in the dark here but is it possible that this points to the older version of the software which was in a different folder but had the same executable name - Myobp.exe
The older version has now been uninstalled so it can't find Myobp.exe??

Just a thought.

Daniel.

The Target address in Properties would not accept 2 word filenames."

Sometimes XP will allow you to get around this by enclosing everything in the address in quotes.

It works! Doesn't really answer the original question as to why I still can't associate MYO extensions but the issue is fixed for now, all I have to do is create a few shortcuts.

Thank you BadFrog, linney and others for the help.

Daniel.
